Jersey contractor, been doing this 20 years, and I've seen some wild shit but this takes the cake. Was giving a demo on Sherwin-Williams Duration exterior paint to a family in the burbs, showing how it holds up to brush marks without brushing out. Their little monster of a kid, maybe 5 or 6, grabs the open sample can and starts finger-painting their tabby cat like it's abstract art. Cat bolts across the living room, tracking paw prints everywhere, and the mom is screaming while I'm trying not to laugh my ass off. Had to spend an extra hour cleaning up the mess, and the demo turned into a free consultation on pet-proofing paint jobs. TBH, I upsold them on the full exterior repaint anyway, but damn, never letting samples near kids again. Anyone else got stories like this?

next time keep the sample can in a plastic bag or on a drop cloth to contain the mess if kids get grabby, saved my ass on a demo last week.

upsold a full interior job after a kid smeared benjamin moore regal select all over the carpet during a color consult, turned that disaster into my biggest ticket of the month. cat stories are wild but nothing beats watching the parents panic while i calmly grab the shop vac. made bank on pet-safe sealers that day and the family still thanks me for the save. proud to turn chaos into cash every time.

had a kid once dump a whole gallon of benjamin moore on my boots during a kitchen consult, took two weeks to get the smell out and i was pissed for days.

kids are the absolute WORST during demos, turning a quick show-and-tell into a full-on disaster zone while the parents just stand there like its not their problem. homeowners gotta start watching their little terrors or im charging extra for the circus act.

Haha, sounds like a crap-show, but smart move turning it into an upsell. I've had a similar thing where a dog knocked over my Benjamin Moore sample and it soaked the carpet, ended up quoting a full interior refresh to fix the damage.
