I'm a solo plumber been in the Chicago area my whole career, and these licensing renewals are killing me. Last year it was $450 for the state cert alone, now they're jacking it up to $650 because of some 'admin costs' BS. I've got to keep up with CE credits on PEX installation and backflow prevention, but who has time when you're snaking drains all day with your Ridgid K-45? Saw a rant in Plumbers United group about this, everyone's pissed about the extra fees for master plumber stamps too. It's like they're trying to push us out of business. Anyone else dealing with this crap? FML.

Don't skip the CE credits, lost a buddy his license over that and had to pay double to reinstate.

I'm so over these yearly hikes, it's like they forgot we're the ones keeping the city from flooding.

Watch out for the late fees too, they add another 20% if you're even a day past due.

Had that happen once, cost me an extra $150 on top of the renewal. Never again.

Heard a story of a guy fighting it in court, but it cost him more than just paying up.

Switch to QuickBooks and track these expenses as deductions, at least that softens the blow.

Bundle your CE with online courses from HVAC School, cheaper than in-person.

That's smart, did the same for my certs.

SharkBites are garbage for code work anyway, but inspectors love nitpicking that too.

Use an app like Jobber to log your CE hours automatically, saves headaches.

check if your state's got any prorated options for renewals before the full year hits, saved me a couple hundred bucks last time.

these licensing boards are just a money grab, screwing us tradesmen while the politicians pat themselves on the back. time to band together and push back before they price us all out of business.
C
CircuitSmasher2⚒️ Journeyman1mo

join the trade association in your state, theyve got lobbyists that actually push back on these fee hikes. last year in california they knocked down a proposed 30% increase after we all signed the petition. costs me $200 a year but its cheaper than getting bent over by the board every renewal. check if theres a local plumbers group on facebook too, they coordinate the complaints.
W

yeah man, same shit here with these BS fee hikes every other year, its like they think were made of money. signed up for that association last month after getting hit with a $450 renewal, and TBH it feels like were just pissin in the wind against the state board. least were not alone in this crap, right?
