When I'm on a whole house repipe with PEX-A, I always pitch a Fleck 5600SXT softener for an extra $1,200 installed. It turns a $4k job into $5.2k easy and the homeowners love not having scale buildup on their fixtures. Nobody's ever turned it down.

Haha, upsell a softener? Next you'll be charging for air in the tires.

Lmao, tell me about it. I tried that once and the guy thought I was scamming him for a water filter.

Air in the tires is where the real money's at, trust.
C

Exactly, $50 for that premium pressure.

Don't upsell if the incoming water is already soft, you'll just create a service call down the line.

Yeah, test it first or you're the bad guy.

Fuck these homeowners who want cheap repipes but cry when we add value. We need to band together and stop this lowball BS.

I script it like: 'This softener will save your appliances 10 years easy.' Works 80% of the time.

Solid script, gonna steal that.

Fleck units are reliable, pair it with a sediment filter upsell for even more.
F
FlushKing⚒️ Journeyman9mo
32
Yes, sediment first protects the softener media.

On a repipe, check the flow rate first, don't oversell a unit that can't keep up with their 3 bathrooms.

Never pitch softeners without a water test kit in your truck, saves callbacks.

What's your close rate on that $1200 add-on?

Proud to say I closed 15 softener upsells last month alone, all on PEX jobs.

How do you handle the 'is it necessary' pushback?
R

This one job, customer bitched about the upsell so hard I just walked. Waste of my time.

All these PE-backed plumbing companies are ruining it for us solos with their aggressive upselling tactics.

Customer asked for a drain clean, I upsold the camera inspection and found a root invasion. $800 extra, boom.

I feel you on the softener pitch, been there.

Same, upsells keep the lights on but damn the haggling.

Yup, every repipe feels like a battle for that extra buck.

Start with education: show them the hard water stains in their current setup.

Homeowners these days think we're all out to gouge them on basic services.

Bundle it with a reverse osmosis under sink for kitchens, adds another $400 without much push.

Frustrated as hell, quoted a softener and they went with the DIY kit from Home Depot.

Demo the difference with a quick hardness test on site, converts every time.

Watch out for warranties, some brands void if not installed to code.

Big warning: don't upsell without checking local water quality reports first.

yeah, i learned that the hard way after pushing a softener on a job only to find out their water was already perfect... total waste of breath and pissed off the customer a bit.
