Jersey contractor, been doing this 20 years, and my referral program for water heater installs just bombed hard. Had a client bitch about a slow drain fix using SharkBite fittings, left a 1-star on Google that scared off two buddies who were gonna refer me for tankless upgrades. Someone in Plumbers United group said to offer $50 gift cards for PEX repipes, but the bad review killed the momentum. Watched a Roger Wakefield video on handling online rep, but man, it's tough when one pissed homeowner tanks your street cred. Now I'm rethinking the whole setup, maybe switch to straight discounts on service calls instead. TBH, reviews are make or break for us plumbers in this market.

switched my referral setup to 20% off the next job two years back and it's been pulling in steady tankless installs without the drama of one bad google rant killing everything.

Switch to a two-tier referral where the referrer gets $25 after the job books and another $25 once it's paid, keeps momentum even after a bad review. I've used that with Google Business Profile invites to nudge positive ones without looking desperate.

dont tie your referral program to sharkbite jobs til youve got a solid buffer of 5-stars, i saw a buddies whole network collapse after one pissed off review like that.

reach out to that pissed off customer with a free follow-up on the drain fix, like schedule a touch-up to make it right and maybe ask em to update the review if youre happy now. that way you show good faith without seeming pushy. ive seen it turn 1-stars into 5s on google alot. then restart your referrals with something small like 25 bucks off next service instead of gift cards to keep it simple.

man one bad review can torpedo a whole referral chain, been there with a p.o.'d customer tanking my google stars after a repipe job.

one bad review from a whiny homeowner and your whole referral program's in the toilet, been there and it pisses me off every time.

try sending review requests two weeks after the job's done with a quick text template asking for honest feedback, bumps up positive ones by about 30% and buries the bad ones faster.

those entitled homeowners who leave 1-star rants over a damn slow drain are RUINING it for all of us, scaring off good referrals left and right while the karens get their revenge online.

those damn karen reviews have me losing $2k in referrals this month alone, its bullshit how one pissed off homeowner can tank everything. wish we could just ignore em but they spread like wildfire.

those google reviews are straight poison when they go south, lost a whole chain of fixture jobs from one crap rating last summer.

don't ignore the bad ones, respond professionally and offer to fix it free. turned a 2-star into referrals for me on a pipe burst job.

big corps dominate with fake reviews, us independents get hosed every time.

try tying referrals to after-job surveys, gets the good ones out faster. worked for my water line replacements.

customer called mid-job yelling about the price, left a rant review, but i laughed it off with the boys over beers.
