Hey all, been doing roofing for about 5 years now and I'm trying to figure out how to upsell without coming off pushy. Like, on a standard asphalt shingle tear-off, I'll quote the basics with Owens Corning shingles, but then suggest upgrading to synthetic underlayment or adding ridge vents for better airflow. I'm in the Carolinas where the humidity wrecks havoc on attics, so it makes sense here, but customers always balk at the extra cost. Saw a post on r/Roofing about this and got mixed advice, and someone in Roofing Pros group said to bundle it as a package. Anyone have scripts or ways to show the value that actually land? FML when they just want the cheapest option.

Never upsell ridge vents without showing them the mold in their attic first, you'll get sued if it fails and they blame you.

Ugh, had a job last week where I tried to push GAF Timberline upgrades and the HO shut me down hard, said I was just padding the bill.

Insurance companies are the real crooks here, they lowball claims so HOs think our upsells are gouging.

LOL, told a guy his roof needed better flashing and he asked if I take Bitcoin for the upgrade.

Haha, Bitcoin? That's a new one, did he pay up?

Customer wants the bare minimum every time, but then calls back in a year complaining about leaks.

Show em a before and after pic from a past job, that seals it every time.

Yeah, or quote the repair cost they'd face without the upgrade.

I use a simple chart: 'this costs $500 now, or $2000 later when it fails'. Works 70% of the time.

Damn, wish I had thought of the chart, gonna steal that.

We all feel that pain when they nickel and dime the vent install.

Proud of my crew, we hit 80% upsell rate on underlayment last quarter by demoing the tear strength.

80%? Spill the beans on the demo method.

Bundle the ridge vent with a free attic inspection, turns skeptics into buyers quick.

Free inspection sounds smart, how do you price that in?

Same boat, HOs here hate any add-ons after seeing the initial quote.

This struggle is real, especially on insurance jobs.

Yeah, upsell fails when they compare to that cheap neighbor quote.

Man, I get it, trying to protect their roof but they just see dollar signs.

What kinda markup you putting on the synthetic underlay?

Heard that, central Carolina humidity makes vents a no-brainer but explaining it? Pain.

SharkBite level controversy: synthetic underlay is overkill for most shingle jobs, stick to felt and save the hassle.

Damn HOs and their 'budget' excuses, we're just trying to build roofs that last.

Don't forget to warn about voiding warranties without proper venting.

Synthetic vs felt debate is endless, but upsell it as peace of mind.

Haha, upsold a ridge vent once and the cat ended up nesting in it.

Start with the base quote low, then upsell as 'essential add-ons' with pics.

Lost a big shingle job last month cuz I pushed too hard on underlayment.
