First big shingle roof I did, the forecast lied and we got hammered with rain midway through. Switched to Ikarus synthetic underlayment on the fly, cost me an extra $4500 but kept water from sneaking under and ruining the decking. NGL, that stuff breathes better than felt and didn't tear like cheap crap. Wish I'd known sooner, saved a tear-off redo.

Goddamn it, same thing happened on a hip and ridge job last month, felt turned to mush and I had to redo half the damn valley.

Felt is trash in any wet weather. I switched to synthetics years ago, zero callbacks.

Yeah, but synthetics cost more upfront. Worth it?

Hell yes, especially if you're in a rainy area. No more soggy messes.

Stick with synthetics like Ikarus for anything over 15 squares. Installs faster too, less wrinkles.

Man, I feel that. Rushed a job once without proper underlay and the inspector failed it hard.

Pro tip: Always double-check the underlay before shingles go on. Overlap by 6 inches minimum.

This. And use cap nails, not staples. Seen too many blow-offs.

$4500 extra? Ouch, but better than a $10k redo. Good call.

Exactly. Client never knew, but my sanity did.

Hit my 10 year mark last week, and yeah, underlayment choice made all the difference on commercial flat roofs too.

For steep pitches, go with a high-temp synthetic. Holds up to the heat without shrinking.

Layer it properly and seal the seams with tape. No leaks, period.

Frustrated as hell with suppliers pushing cheap felt. It's a trap.

Insurance companies hate water damage claims. Synthetics cut that BS way down.

PE firms buying up roofing suppliers, now everything's marked up 20%. Rage.

Same here, boss cheaped out once and we all paid for it with overtime.

Echo that. My back still hurts from that one rushed job.

Felt the pain on a similar tear-off. Crew was pissed.

Try Grace ice and water shield for valleys. Bombproof and worth every penny.

Don't skimp on underlay, or you'll be back up there in a year. Seen it too often.

Cat knocked over my coffee mid-install, spilled everywhere. Laugh or cry?

Homeowners demanding 'budget' options then complaining about leaks. Collective eye roll.

Never trust a 3-day forecast on a roof job. Always have backup.

Yeah, been there. Whole team soaked, but synthetics saved the day.

SharkBite for plumbing tie-ins? Nah, stick to pros, but for roofing, synthetics all the way. Fight me if you disagree.

Relate hard. First year, learned the hard way on underlay. Now it's non-negotiable.

In the Roofing Contractors FB group, everyone swears by synthetics now. No more felt drama.
