Permits for shingle re-roofs in Florida: who's covering the $500 fee?

Doing a lot of asphalt shingle replacements on older ranch homes here in central Florida, and the county's started charging $500 just for the basic permit on any roof over 15 squares. I always factor it into my flat rate quotes, but customers flip when they see that line item - told one last week it's non-negotiable to pass inspection. Who's footing the bill in your area, or do you eat it to keep the job?

Build the permit fee into your material line or overhead, never itemize it separately or they'll nickel and dime you to death.

Fuck these counties, always adding bullshit fees to squeeze more out of roofers while the inspectors sit on their asses. It's collective theft by bureaucracy.

Exactly, and then they take forever to approve anyway, delaying your whole schedule.

Same hassle here, feels like every job's a paperwork nightmare.

I get it, the red tape is exhausting especially when you're already dealing with weather delays.

Just closed a $45k commercial flat roof job in Texas, permits were $800 but I marked it up 20% and the GC didn't bat an eye - worth it for the peace of mind.

Screw eating the cost, charge what the market bears but make sure your contract spells out who's responsible for permits upfront.

Yeah, had a client try to back out over that clause last month, but the fine print saved my ass.

How do you handle it when the HO wants to skip the permit altogether? Ever had that blow up?
