Been running my roofing crew out here in rural Ohio for 10 years now, and finding reliable guys who won't flake on shingle installs is impossible. Last month I had to fire a helper after he botched a $2500 asphalt shingle job on a steep pitch, costing me extra for the tear-off. Now I'm back to solo work on most residential re-roofs, which is killing my schedule. How do you all handle hiring for seasonal peaks without getting screwed?

dont hire without checkin their insurance first, i saw a guy get hit with a $15k claim after his helper sparked a fire durin a torch-down job last summer. rural ohio aint got alot of options but cuttin corners on thatll screw you worse than flakin workers. had a buddy who skipped the bonded check and ended up payin out of pocket for the whole mess. stick to guys with real coverage or youll be solo forever.

man i feel that pain, lost a whole week last season chasing down flakey landscapers who ghosted mid-job and left me holding the bag on a $4k sod install.

man, rural ohio hiring is a total crapshoot, i've lost count of the flakes who no-show on shingle jobs and leave me scrambling.

these damn rural flakers are the WORST, man - had one no-show on a 12/12 pitch last week and i lost a whole day's pay chasing down a replacement.

try hiring squirrels for your next shingle job, at least they dont flake on steep pitches. had one guy last summer who showed up high on energy drinks, ended up nailing his own boot to the roof... fired him before he could sue me for the tetanus shot. solo work sucks but hey, more quiet up there without the circus.

man, the flakey help out here in ohio has me solo on jobs way more than i should be, totally get the frustration.

don't hire without running a background check and a trial day on a low-stakes job, i saw a guy get sued for $10k after his flake helper damaged a customer's garage during a shingle drop. saves you headaches down the line.

goddamn seasonal idiots show up thinkin theyre pros but flake the second it rains or the pitch gets real, screwin every roofer in rural spots like this.

those damn flakes and half-assed installers are RUINING rural gigs for all of us, forcing solo hauls on jobs that should take a crew in a day.

solo roofing in rural ohio? sounds like you're auditioning for the lone ranger, minus the horse and plus a lot more blisters. i started hiring from the local bar tab 'reliable' crew, but half flaked before the first nail gun fired lol.

screw hiring locals, they're all lazy drunks out there. just bring in a couple undocumented guys from the city, they work circles around these flakey ohio boys and cost half as much.

i've built a solid crew of four in my area by only hiring guys who've logged at least two seasons on steep pitches, and it's paid off with zero botched jobs this year. we stick to owens corning duration shingles for every install since they hold up better in ohio's wind and rain. now i'm booking twice the re-roofs without the headaches.

it's the same crap everywhere, these unreliable flakes show up when the weather's good and ghost you during peak season, leaving us all scrambling like idiots.

man, firing guys for botched shingle jobs sucks, especially on steep pitches. how do you even find decent helpers in rural ohio without them flaking?

man, rural ohio hiring is a crapshoot, same bullshit here with guys showing up late or vanishing mid-job. had one flake on a ridge vent install last week and it threw my whole schedule off. feels like solo work is the only way to not get burned anymore.

dont hire without checking their osha 10 card first, lost a whole crew last season when some greenhorn without it caused a scaffold collapse on a rural ohio barn job.

screw hiring locals in rural areas, just tap into the union hall and demand osha 10 certs upfront or you're asking for more headaches. half the time these independents show up high or ghost you after one check, costing you way more than a slight premium on union rates. i've seen crews fall apart mid-job because no one's got the discipline, and yeah it pisses me off every season. if you're solo now, bite the bullet and subcontract to a reliable outfit instead of playing foreman to flakes. fight me if you think diy hiring's the way in ohio, but it'll bury your schedule deeper.

goddamn seasonal roofers out here are all the same, show up high on Monster energy and flake after one paycheck, its like they think roofing's a hobby not a job.

try postin ads on craigslist with a $18/hr starter rate and a 'no shows get ghosted' clause, saved my ass from the flakes last season.

FML, I just hired a guy who showed up to his first ridge vent install with a hangover and dropped his nail gun off the roof, nearly brained the homeowner's dog. Had to let him go mid-shift and finish the $1800 tear-off myself while laughing my ass off at the chaos.
