Been doing roofs in south Florida for 15 years, but my bookkeeping is a mess with all the material costs for asphalt shingles and TPO membranes adding up quick. Just got hit with a $4500 penalty from an audit cuz I couldn't separate my supply runs from Home Depot vs job-specific expenses. Watched a video from that roofing channel on YouTube about using QuickBooks for contractors, but I'm still screwed on how to retrofix this without hiring a CPA.
i turned my roofing side gig into a clean $200k operation last year by ditching the home depot receipts mess and going all-in on quickbooks online for contractors. set up categories for every damn supply run, from asphalt shingles to tpo rolls, and it auto-tracks everything against jobs so audits are a breeze now. retrofixed my last three years of books in about two weeks flat, no cpa needed. feels damn good not sweating penalties anymore.

damn that audit sounds rough, been there with my own mess on supply tracking. you tryin to sort the home depot receipts by date or job number first to retrofix it? what kinda roofing software you lookin at besides quickbooks?

don't ignore those audits, i saw a roofer buddy in florida get slammed with $10k in back taxes last year cuz he mixed all his home depot runs with job costs. ended up selling his truck to pay it off and almost went under. fix your quickbooks setup now or hire that cpa before the irs comes knockin again.

those damn audits are a total scam, hitting us roofers with bullshit penalties while the irs sits on its ass. south florida's supply costs are already killing us without this crap.

the irs audits are pure BS, they nail us contractors for every damn receipt while the big corps skate free. south florida's humidity ain't the only thing screwing us over, it's this audit crap piling on.

screw the audit BS, just lump all your home depot runs under one generic 'materials' category and let the IRS chase their tails... works for half the roofers i know down here.

yeah the IRS is a damn joke down here in florida, hittin small roofers with these $4500 audits while the big corps skate by, pisses me off every time.

quickbooks has a contractor add-on that lets you tag expenses by job right from your phone, so you can retrofix by scanning receipts and categorizin home depot runs separate. set up classes for supplies like asphalt shingles and it'll keep the auditor off your back without droppin $2k on a cpa.

Fuck these audits, they target small roofers like us every time to squeeze every damn penny while the big outfits get away with BS.

Man, I feel you on that Florida heat making everything twice the paperwork. Switched to a simple spreadsheet for my shingle jobs and it saved my ass during last year's review.

Spreadsheets are fine until you miss a deduction on underlayment costs. The state loves piling on roofers with these surprise checks, it's all about the revenue grab.
