Fired two helpers this month alone after they screwed up a $6500 Malarkey Legacy install, wasting half a bundle on misaligned starters. These kids come in thinking roofing is just hammering away, but they don't know shit about proper nailing patterns or venting. I'm down to one reliable guy now, and jobs are backing up fast. Anyone got tips on where to find decent entry-level roofers who actually listen?

try posting ads on craigslist or even the local fb groups for trades, i've had luck finding green guys who stick around if you start em on small tear-offs and drill the 6-inch nailing pattern into their heads before they touch malarkey. pay em $18/hr to start and bump it after a month if they dont screw up starters again. keeps the backups down without the headache of flakes.

man, same shit here with these greenhorns wrecking my jobs left and right. lost a whole day last week cleaning up after some kid who nailed the underlayment like it was a piñata. it's like they watch one youtube vid and think they're pros. been there, hope you find a solid one soon.

try posting in the local trade schools around here, they got a pool of kids who at least show up on time and wanna learn the 6-nail pattern right. had luck with one from a vo-tech program last year, turned him into my lead helper after a couple weeks of shadowing. skip the craigslist randos, theyre more trouble than theyre worth.

those green roofers are a plague on the whole industry, botching malarkey jobs left and right and leaving us pros to clean up their crap. i've lost count of the tear-offs i've had to do because some idiot didnt know the first thing about proper nailing. screw craigslist, we need better screening before these hacks ruin our rep.
